GMLC’s student volunteer Zayd Tariq won this year’s award at Greater Manchester Pro Bono Awards for Best Student Contribution for his work on our Legal Advocacy Student Project (LASP).
This year, GMLC was nominated for two Greater Manchester Pro Bono Awards. Though the project overall did not take the crown, our LASP volunteer Zayd Tariq was personally nominated for Best Student Contribution – and won.
Zayd has shown excellent client care skills and flexibility supporting his welfare benefits clients over the last year. His Urdu language skills, leadership and unique style have contributed to his great work putting £46,562 in benefits into the hands of GM residents over the last year, of a total £304,652 in gains across the whole LASP student volunteer cohort this year.
Every year, our LASP volunteers help us to make sure a huge number of GM residents get the benefits they are entitled to. They represent our clients in disability benefit appeals at the Tribunal, and provide advice and support through the appeal process. This gives them vital advocacy experience and an insight into social welfare law and defending the rights of low-income residents in our city.
We say: thank you to all our LASP students past and present for their hard work.

Thank you to Zayd for the cake!
