Many of us decide to go into law because we see injustice in our society and we want to be part of challenging it – whether it’s poverty and homelessness, mistreatment of migrants by the government, or more general inequality and unfairness. Working in this sector to change people’s lives and challenge injustice can be deeply rewarding. However, it can be hard to work out how to plan a path towards a career in social welfare because of difficulties with funding, information and opportunities.
GM Law Centre is a free-to-access law firm and advice agency offering employment, housing and benefits advice and representation. We also host volunteers and do our best to support the next generation of social welfare lawyers. Many people who volunteer for us go on to become solicitors, barristers and specialist advice workers with the expertise and passion to support people to overcome legal barriers in their lives and society. We also campaign on social issues affecting our communities.
