Give the Gift of Free Access to Justice
We are running a really exciting Christmas promotion, which not only aims to raise much needed funds to support our work, but is also a unique way to give… and to give again this Christmas.
At the same time we are promoting the amazing work our volunteer team is doing with our housing solicitor Kathy for the homeless in Greater Manchester.
Our offer is a range of Gift Certificates. Read up on what each gift you give would allow us to do: https://www.gmlaw.org.uk/gift2018/
Also read about how we recently helped Angela to find a home for her and her newborn baby.
One of the core principals we developed together with about 50 volunteers and staff at our Away Day in September was that a secure home should be a right for everyone!
And this is what we are fighting for now.
This Winter many people in Greater Manchester are homeless. Legal advice is a vital tool to help people out of homelessness. Many people who are forced to sleep on the streets become homeless because of unresolved legal problems (evictions by rogue landlords, unlawful benefit decisions, unmet care needs and being wrongly turned away when they seek homelessness assistance from the Council). Advice to address these problems is often the only way to ensure the rights of homeless people to suitable and long term accommodation. By themselves, cold weather beds and food parcels are not a solution but a sticking plaster, a much needed attempt to prevent further deaths of homeless people on our streets.
Until every person who is homeless, living in unfit housing conditions, or at risk of losing their homes can access free, high quality, face to face legal advice then there will be no access to justice and the shame of homelessness in the UK and Greater Manchester has little hope of improving.

Abolish Section 21: the perspective of a court advocate
“As an aspiring barrister and advocate in civil practice for a number of years, I have on countless occasions presented cases to court in order to obtain possession against tenants pursuant to a section 21 notice seeking possession (“s.21”). Evictions of this nature have become colloquially known as “no fault evictions”. S.21 must be abolished”
In August 2018, the Greater Manchester Law Centre joined the campaign to abolish section 21 of the Housing Act 1998, which allows landlords to evict their tenants with just two months’ notice, without the tenants having done anything wrong.
November 15th 2018 was the 30th anniversary of the 1988 Housing Act becoming law. The Act has faced widespread criticism for undermining private renters’ rights.
Support for the campaign is growing, with two borough councils pledging their support and over 50,000 signatories to a national petition. On November 15th 2018, GMLC joined the #ReinventYourRent day of online action to raise the profile of the campaign.
