Giles has been giving advice about benefits for more than 20 years at various Citizens Advice Bureaux across the North West, including the now closed South Manchester Law Centre. Over that time, he has acted as a representative for around 2,000 clients, about half of whom he has represented in person at tribunals. He is currently Advice Service Manager at Manchester Mind.
Giles has also provided formal and informal training to other benefits advisers and taught social security law at Manchester Metropolitan University. He held LSC (Legal Services Commission) Supervisor standard for specialist advice on welfare benefits from 2002 to 2013. Giles holds the following relevant qualifications:
- Level 3 Award in Education and Training (formerly known as ‘PTLLS’) (Southport College/Ascentis)
- Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (Advice UK/City & Guilds)

Lastly, from 2016 to 2017, Giles was involved in setting up and supervising GMLC’s Legal Advocacy Support Project (LASP).
